About this project
SeaPop: Functional Popcorn with Spirulina and Upcycled Shrimp Powder
SeaPop™ is a functional popcorn developed as a convenient snack with added nutritional value. The product combines corn, spirulina and food-grade shrimp head powder to create a unique snack with a savoury and umami taste. Corn acts as the main source of carbohydrates, while spirulina provides protein and other nutrients. The shrimp head powder adds flavour and nutritional value while making use of an underutilised by-product from the seafood processing industry.
The idea behind SeaPop is to provide consumers with a more meaningful snack choice while reducing the amount of seafood by-products that are not fully utilised. Instead of being treated as waste, shrimp heads can be processed into a food-grade powder and used as an ingredient in a ready-to-eat product.
SeaPop also has potential beyond popcorn. The shrimp-based seasoning can be further developed for other food products such as crackers, chips, noodles and biscuits. This creates opportunities for product diversification and future business growth.
The project supports SDG 2, SDG 3, SDG 12, SDG 13 and SDG 14 by promoting food diversification, nutritional value, responsible use of food resources and better utilisation of seafood by-products.
