PLASTIBRICK: ECO BRICK FROM PLASTIC WASTE
Building Tomorrow From Yesterday’s Waste
The team
About this project
The growing accumulation of plastic waste presents a critical environmental challenge, particularly as large quantities of plastic are disposed of in landfills, drainage systems, rivers and oceans. PlastiBrick: Eco Brick from Plastic Waste offers an innovative solution by transforming non-recyclable plastic waste into a valuable and sustainable construction material. PlastiBrick incorporates approximately 70% plastic waste, 15% cement and 10% sand, creating a lightweight and durable alternative to conventional bricks. Each brick weighs approximately 1 kg, compared with 2.5 - 3 kg for a common brick, while achieving a compressive strength of 15 MPa and water absorption of less than 1%. The innovation provides a practical pathway for diverting plastic waste from disposal while reducing reliance on conventional construction materials. Its potential applications include non-load-bearing walls, pavement blocks, walkways, outdoor seating and small-scale structures, demonstrating its versatility for sustainable development. Beyond the product itself, PlastiBrick promotes community recycling and circular-economy practices by converting waste into a functional resource. Through industry collaboration, community engagement, intellectual property development and research support, the project demonstrates strong potential for commercialization and wider environmental impact. PlastiBrick ultimately contributes to SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by turning yesterday’s waste into tomorrow’s sustainable building solution.
