FreshSense
Biosensor stickers with AI powered smart food packaging platform for real-time food spoilage-risk monitoring
The team
About this project
Nowadays, a significant amount of food waste still occurs, especially when consumers and
businesses rely mainly on expiry dates to determine whether food is still safe to consume. At
the same time, consuming spoiled or improperly stored food may increase the risk of food
poisoning. Therefore, our project, FreshSense, aims to provide real-time food spoilage-risk
monitoring beyond conventional expiry dates.
FreshSense is an AI-powered smart food packaging platform that uses food-specific
biosensor labels to detect chemical changes associated with food spoilage. It also monitors
temperature changes during food storage, providing additional information about the food’s
condition. Users can scan the sensor using a smartphone application to obtain a simple
freshness-risk status, helping them make more informed decisions before consuming or
selling the food.
The business will adopt a B2B-first model, targeting supermarkets, food manufacturers,
restaurants, and food delivery companies. Key activities include biosensor R&D,
manufacturing and quality control, AI and app development, and regulatory compliance.
Customer relationships will be supported through a mobile app, automated freshness alerts,
customer support, and B2B account management. The main costs include R&D and
laboratory testing, biosensor material production, manufacturing and packaging, app and AI
development, regulatory and safety testing, and staff and operational costs.
By providing information beyond conventional expiry dates, FreshSense aims to help
businesses make better food inventory decisions, reduce unnecessary disposal of edible
food, identify potential spoilage risks earlier, reduce the risk of foodborne illness, and
minimise economic losses.
