About this project
According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia's 2025 National Household Indicators Survey, Malaysian households generate between 31.9kg and 97.3kg of food waste per person every year, with 94.1% of households discarding cooked food and 88.7% discarding raw food. Expired food is the leading cause, cited by 19.3% of households, followed by leftovers kept too long, overbuying and cooking excess portions. Malaysia was also ranked among the highest food-wasting countries in ASEAN by the UN Environment Programme's 2024 Food Waste Index.
ReRipe is a web app that tackles this directly. It helps households track their pantry, get reminded before food expires, and instantly generate an AI-powered recipe using ingredients that are about to go bad. This directly addresses Malaysia's top cause of food waste. Users can also plan meals to avoid overbuying, build a shopping list from missing ingredients, and review a weekly summary of what they have used or wasted by category, helping them recognise and correct wasteful habits over time.
ReRipe is built for Malaysian households looking to reduce grocery waste and spending, with future potential to serve small F&B businesses managing perishable inventory. By turning a passive warning into an action that can be taken, ReRipe helps tackle one of the region's most overlooked sustainability problems. With the potential to meaningfully cut household grocery spending and reduce food-related waste, ReRipe offers a scalable, low-effort way for every Malaysians to be part of the solution.
